Antivirus progs - are they really necessary? Who has them and which one?
I've just replaced F-Secure with Trend Micro Mobile Security and wondered if it's something that's really worth having on a phone or a hog of resources.
I had a look at the mobile worms/viruses that exist and they don't seem to be very cryptic or hard to avoid? Things like receiving a file via bluetooth with a specific name that identifies it straight away and gives you the option to install it?
I'm intrigued to know who here uses any kind of mobile security if at all?

I've had many other mobile devices and handhelds, but this is my first symbian device. However, I think the facts here apply to all of them. Mobile phone viruses are at this point pretty rare birds. I don't think you need an antivirus at all. I have no intention of getting one. If you are worried that there are folks sending you fishy bluetooth files, turn off your bluetooth when you're out and about. ;)

I'm not wasting my money/resources/battery power on any anti-virus software. I'd rather take the risk and not install files from unknown bluetooth users!

I agree, as long as you dont go around with your bluettoth on, you're pretty safe. If u do decide to buy an antivirus NEVER get Symantec Mobile Security 4.0 i've tried it's dreadfully slow. Mcafee works much better!

But it's not just via Bluetooth. It's MMS too. Even opening the MMS could infect your handset and start dialling premium rate numbers WITHOUT you even knowing its happening.
There are several such viruses that are out there and known, and pose a risk to anyone not running AV. the decission is always down to the user as to whether to take this risk or not.

Well, at the moment I consider the chances of that happening to be very slim. I've never received an MMS from anyone. As I'm on Pay As You Go even if it did happen to me the damage would be limited to how much credit I had a the time (usually not much and probably less than the cost of an AV ;) ).
However, if it did become a widespread problem then I'd consider running some security or just disabling features such as MMS sending. But right now I'm just going to stay cautious.

If you are worried about battery life, download F-secure, but set it to manual (not continuous scanning). Then run it once a week...
But as an IT manager who has had machines hacked into, I prefer to be safe than sorry... I leave mine running... haven't seen any unusual drain on the battery...
