Fring vs. Truphone

Hey guys.

I just got my N95 today. I was wondering what the difference between Fring and Truphone are? To me, it seems like Fring makes free calls to anywhere as long as its over Wi-fi, whereas Truphone, you can make free calls anywhere to other Truphone users only?

Can someone help clear this up? Thanks for your time.

You can call ANY phone with Truphone. Calls to other Truphone users are free and calls to all other numbers are at low internet rates.

Plus.... if you sign up before Sep 30 you can call landlines in 40 countries around the world for free. See truphone.com for more details :)

I think you got them confused.

Fring allows communication over Skype, Google Talk, MSN etc.. Calls to Skype is free, and if you make calls to ANYWHERE else, you get charged the Skype rate, to your Skype account.

Messages sent to GT, MSN etc is free as per usual from a text messenger.

Truphone on the other hand, integrates with the Nokia N95 software, in such a way that it is almost not a third party application.

It can make free phone calls to US Landlines and Mobiles, and to 40 other countries worldwide. You also buy credit for Truphone if you want to text or calling a location other than the FREE areas. In my experience Truphone has been cheaper and an overall better experience on the N95 than fring.

Yeah, I couldnt actually call my family and friends in the US because of the horrific delay and parts of sentances just dropping, and all of a sudden just rushing at me... like a cd or mp3 played 4x normal speed.

Truphone makes a call from South Africa to US seem like just any other phone call, perfect quality and no delay. So I am really impressed with Truphone.

Hi Persian Kabob, I've both Fring and TruPhone installed in my N95. As you know, they're both VOIP apps...Fring has additional functions integrated such as Skype, Google Talk, and MSN Chat...I know that Fring allows free calls to be made among Fring users, and calls to be made to both land and mobile lines using Skype (though I don't think they are free). TruPhone on the other hand, allows you to make free calls to mobile and land lines to 40 countries (till Dec 07)....do check it out....Enjoy your N95. Cheers.

Hi Persian_Kabob,

Can’t really tell you what Fring do but I can tell you what Truphone do!

Firstly with Truphone you can make free calls to other Truphone users for ever and ever, but currently (and until December 31st) you can also make free calls to 40 countries worldwide (and some mobiles too).

We also offer free SMS messages to other Truphone users and £2/$2 free credit when you sign up to get you on your way :)

Our Truphone application makes it easy to manage your wireless access points (hotspots) so you can seamlessly connect between them, and we also support 3G (be careful when using 3G as some data plans can be costly).

Regards,
Ant

Quick warning... I just installed truphone and I like it ... but I lost all my speeddial numbers when I installed it!

Truphone comes with a warning to back up your phone stuff before installing.. I recommend you do so!

I've just had to remove truphone. While its hard to be sure of the cause, after installing truphone, my speeddial kept disappearing... and then the phone started rebooting everytime I would press and hold any speeddial number...

I had to completely reinstall the OS....
