is there an application for the n95 that will play (out loud through the speaker) whatever i type in the phone?

Try Speereo voice translator .

It's pretty much what you're looking for, it's basically a phrase-book with a lot of set phrases, and it speaks aloud whatever you select. You can get a free trial which lets you use the "travel" section, or buy the full version (which I don't believe costs a lot).

Hope this helps

Not that I'm aware of. But if you do find one that does Japanese too give me a shout, I'm going to Japan in October and all I can say is "hi", "bye", "thanks", and "yes" .

The Voice Translator program is really quite good though, it covers quite a range of topics, it even has a dating section including such phrases as "It's no secret that you delight me" XD... seriously though it's a pretty good program I'd recommend it.
