irRemote Review - Just a Quicky

Has it been long enough? Yes, yes it has.. But finally Psiloc have pulled their finger out and produced what we've all been waiting for:

irRemote for s60 3rd Edition devices! Or a beta anyways..

(A final release is suspected to be due later this month)

I'm just going to run through it quickly for those not so well acquainted with the application - Just a little taster for ye ;D

First of all, there are now ALOT of availible codes to download, and with that, quite a big list of compatible devices

The interface is nice and simple; Psiloc have made it very easy to browse and download individual codes for your own requirements

And as if that wasn't enough, they've even thrown in an extra skin for using your downloaded codes

And that's pretty much it - Simple, yet very effective! (Within a 2-3 meter radius anyway ;P)

The key to getting full use out of the application is having popularly bought equipment (Often the expensive stuff).. So just don't expect to find a code for a Tesco branded DVD Player, even though the code database is growing indefinitely

In my opinion this took way too long to appear but definitely worth the wait! Switching the channels around at a friends house while he frantically replaces the batteries in his remote never gets boring ;P

Any chance for a more accurate estimate on the range? Please?

Psiloc are currently testing that themselves - They have provided 10 different IR connection methods within the beta, which they have requestd feedback on

I suppose you're mainly looking at a 2-2.5m radius or less for a strong signal, but I'll do my best to try and give it some testing by tomorrow

Sorry, I'm a little late with the results of the range here, but I went through it all last night and got some mediocre results

I was literally measuring the furthest distance I could reach at which I felt I was making a connection with each button press 100% of the time

Going through all 10 IR connection methods (Which I shan't go into as these will not be included in the final release), to find an average on each of my 5 different tested devices, I came to a mean average of a 2.63 meter range

Device averages(Meters):
  1. 2.46
  2. 2.56
  3. 2.58
  4. 2.6
  5. 2.95

Notice the slightly higher 2.95m on the 5th device? This was on a regular HiFi system - I rechecked my results and came out with the same, leading me to think the device itself can influence the results here

As a more accurate conclusion, I will discard the HiFi results and leave you with an average of a 2.55meter range from the remaining 4 devices

Pretty mediocre, like I said - Not a great distance but practical in most living rooms ;)
